In 2023, the beginning of this geologic time was defined based on core samples found at the (15[1])meromictic (15[1])Lake (15[1])Crawford in Ontario. An early start to this geologic time is proposed by the Ruddiman hypothesis. One proposed start to this geologic time is at the “Orbis Spike” caused by increased plant growth in the Americas. A Working (15[1])Group named for this geologic time included Paul Crutzen, who coined the term for it in a (*) 2000 newsletter. The “Great Acceleration” is often considered to have begun alongside the start of this epoch.
