In 2023, the beginning of this geologic time was defined based on core samples found at the meromictic Lake Crawford in (15[1])Ontario. An early start to this geologic time is proposed by the Ruddiman hypothesis. One proposed start to this geologic time is at the “Orbis Spike” caused by increased plant growth in the Americas. A Working Group named for this geologic time included Paul Crutzen, who coined the term for it in a (*) 2000 (10[1])newsletter. The “Great Acceleration” is often considered to have begun alongside the start of this epoch. According to one definition, this epoch began with the presence of plutonium found in soils from around 1950.
