In 2023, the beginning of this geologic time was defined based on core samples found at the meromictic Lake Crawford in Ontario. An early start to this geologic time is proposed by the Ruddiman hypothesis. One proposed start to this geologic time is at the “Orbis Spike” caused by increased plant growth in (10[1])the Americas. A Working Group named for this geologic time included Paul Crutzen, who coined the term for it in a (*) 2000 newsletter.
