This event led to the failure of Indiana governor Noah Noble’s Mammoth Internal Improvement Act. A nickname for this event, “Hard Times,” also identified copper tokens made to satirize this event, which was exacerbated by Hessian flies causing a wheat shortage. An executive order issued in the lead-up to this event applied to lands over 320 acres and made an exemption for certain Virginia scrip. The nonrenewal of the charter of the Second Bank of the United States led to this event being influenced by wildcat banks.
