Historical precursors of this language experienced three distinct shortening processes resulting in trisyllabic laxness. The Brown Corpus and a Survey of this language’s Usage grounded a “Comprehensive Grammar” of this language produced by Randolph Quirk. Dialects of this language are separated by the Humber-Lune Line. This language’s (-5[1])grammar was studied by (*) Otto Jespersen, who described how long vowels in this language broke from their (-5[1])spelling in a process he called the Great Vowel Shift.
