In an odd fragmentary inscription that’s now at the Met, an unidentified Egyptian god is called the “lord of [these animals’] town.” In an Egyptian myth, these animals are created when a different animal drinks from a sacred lake. One of these animals with its offspring represented the [emphasize] return of the Faraway Goddess. The name of an Egyptian deity to whom these animals were sacred may represent that deity’s association with ointment jars. In some accounts, Ra transforms into a knife-wielding, (*) giant one of these animals to kill Apep. (10[1])Ibises and these (10[1])animals were by far the most common to offer as mummies, (10[1])often in mass (10[1])graves that sometimes had millions of individual animals.
