In this region, the world’s oldest leather shoe was found in the Areni-1 cave. Cyclopean walls surrounding a city with a phallic obelisk were found in this region at Shengavit. People in this region would bury egg-shaped vessels called Qvevri (15[1])to make wine. A group (15[1])of Milesian Greeks established the city of Phasis in this region. Gold and silver tubes, possibly used to drink beer, that were found in this region were made by the Maykop culture, which, like this region's (*) Kura-Araxes culture, constructed burial mounds called kurgans.
