In this region, the world’s oldest leather shoe was found in the Areni-1 cave. Cyclopean walls surrounding a city with a phallic obelisk were found in this region at Shengavit. People in this region would bury egg-shaped vessels called Qvevri to make wine. A group of Milesian Greeks established the city of Phasis in this region.
