Question
This painting was identified with one mentioned in The Book of One Hundred Chapters upon its 1904 restoration, during which a Palekh-style “renewal” was stripped away. This most prominent of the artworks made during its artist’s collaboration with Daniel Chorny was ignored for much of its history when only the central figures’ hands, feet, and tsatas-encircled faces were visible. From left to right, the background of this painting features a house, tree, and mountain, the latter two of which are likely the (*) Oak of Mamre and Mount Moriah. The head of a calf sits in a cup on the central table in this illustration of a scene from Genesis 18, made for the Lavra of Saint Sergius, which does not include a patriarch nor his wife, instead focusing on their three visitors. For 10 points, name this representation of the Godhead, the only positively identified icon by Andrei Rublev. ■END■
