Rashad Khalifa’s “Quran Code” led him to reject two verses from this chapter that tell of the Prophet’s anxiety for the believers, which Zaid ibn Thabit reported only being recalled by Khuzayma ibn Thabit. A verse of this surah that lists captives, debtors, and wayfarers is read as delineating the eight asnaf who should benefit from zakat. This chapter likely refers to the Biblical Ezra in its thirtieth verse’s repudiation of the notion that the (*) son of God is Uzair. This surah is often considered a direct continuation of al-Anfal, its immediate predecessor. The command, “When the sacred months are over,” to “slay the idolators wherever you find them” appears (10[1])in the fifth verse of this surah, (-5[1])the only one that does not begin with the Bismillah.
