This work opens with a stepwise theme that begins [read slowly] E, F-sharp, G, F-sharp, G-sharp, A, G-sharp. That theme is sung by the first basses in the first choral statement of this work, which is initially harmonized with an E minor arpeggiation in the first sopranos. Chaos and unrest in this work is represented by a triple forte diminished chord on the word ‘Barrabam!’. Strings almost always accompany one character in a (15[1])so-called (*) “halo effect” in this work, (-5[1])which includes the aria “Erbarme dich.” A 1829 performance of this work at the Berlin Singakademie, which sparked the beginning of its composer’s mid-nineteenth century ‘Revival’, was led by Felix Mendelssohn.
