Iodine and this ligand are complexed with iridium to catalyze the production of acetic acid from methanol in the Cativa process. Due to pi-backbonding, this ligand has the largest crystal-field splitting parameter in the spectrochemical series. This compound and hydrogen form water gas, and it is the primary reducing agent in blast furnaces. Though it is not produced during complete combustion, incomplete combustion produces this compound.
