A variant of this language spoken by some Kwasio people, among others, uses the slang term “Xium” (“shee-OOM”) for “wow.” In 1958, people who spoke this language gave up a coastal town now called Tarfaya, the same year a province containing cities called “River of Gold” and “Red Canal” was formed.
