These objects are depicted at the bottom of Shosaizu-themed poem-and-painting scrolls by Zen monks. In Joseon palaces, five of these objects are painted on a folding screen behind the Phoenix Throne. In Qiú Yīng’s Emperor Minghuang’s Journey to Sichuan, these objects are bright blue. These objects define the (*) "threshold" in an ink wash style used by Zhāng Zéduān named for water and these objects. A timberyard and tea plantation appear in the foreground of two of an additional ten works added to a series depicting one of these objects, which dominates the composition of Fine Wind, Clear Morning.
