At the morendo end of this concerto’s second movement, the soloist plays a descending G major pentatonic scale in a series of harmonics. This piece’s final movement opens with low strings playing F-sharps before a trio of horns introduce the jaunty, triplet-laden main theme. The descending melody, “long high F-sharp, E D B, D A” begin the lyrical second theme of this concerto’s first movement. The soloist enters in major on the notes “long B, C-sharp D-sharp (*) B” (10[1])in this piece, which was inspired by Victor Herbert’s second piece in the same genre. This concerto quotes its composer’s song “Leave Me Alone” in its third movement.
