In this work, a salmon swallows a pike, who swallowed a whitefish, who swallowed a spark of fire dropped by Ukko. It’s not in Welsh, (10[1])but the Elvish language of Quenya was inspired by a reading of this (10[1])work by J.R.R. Tolkien, who wrote about the tragedy of its character Kullervo. This work is often told (10[1])to the music of a kantele (“KON-teh-leh”) and was compiled from a (10[1])series of expeditions around Kola and (10[1])Karelia. The blacksmith (10[2])Illmarinen in this work creates a mill-like artifact called the Sampo. In this trochaic tetrameter poem compiled by Elias Lönnrot, Louhi battles against Väinämöinen (“VIE-nuh-MOY-nen”) and Lemminkäinen (“LEH-min-kai-nen”) For 10 points, name this Finnish national epic. ■END■
