In 2020, Jeffrey Blomster and Victor Chavez challenged the idea that this activity emerged primarily in the lowlands, with findings at the 3,400-meter high site of Etlalongo. Plastered mounds were found at a place associated with this activity at the Hohokam site of Snaketown. The oldest structure used for this activity (-5[1])was discovered at Paso de la Amada.
