Fra Angelico’s version of this scene was commissioned by the Camaldolese Order to commemorate the accession of Ambrogio Traversari. Along with an altarpiece by Hugo van der Goes, Tommaso Portinari is known for his inclusion as a donor in a painting of this scene. That version of this scene was captured at sea by the privateer Paul Beneke as it was being transported from Bruges, and depicts the central figure clad in golden armor holding a scale. That depiction of this scene is by (*) Hans Memling. In one depiction of this scene, a green man strikes passengers in a boat with an oar. In that depiction of this scene, the painter included an image of himself as Saint Bartholomew holding his flayed skin.
