This instrument accompanies the aria “Parto, parto, ma tu, ben mio” from La Clemenza di Tito. Ravel remarked that he wrote the slow movement of his G major piano concerto while “under the spell” of the Larghetto from a Mozart chamber piece that features this instrument. In the Adagio movement of a concerto for this instrument, the soloist enters immediately with the notes, “A, long D [pause], F-sharp F-sharp E D.” This instrument joins viola and piano in Mozart’s (*) “Kegelstatt” trio. Brahms and Mozart both wrote late quintets for this instrument and string quartet, respectively for Richard Mühlfeld (10[1])(“REE-card MOOL-felt”) and Anton Stadler. It’s not (10[1])horn, but Mozart’s last instrumental work was an A major concerto for the “basset” variant of this instrument, which is pitched in A rather than the usual B-flat.
