This good was the primary source of the “black alteration” of jade artifacts unearthed from high-class tombs. This good, which represented “Real Fire,” was mixed with another good representing “Real Water” and slathered on the feet to allow a person to walk on water, as recounted in Gě Hóng's Bàopǔzǐ in its section on jīndān. Non-black colored ink derived from this good was brushed over oracle bone scripts.
