This piece opens with the strings trading the motifs [read slowly] “G, A-sharp, B” and “G, C-sharp, D” after high G–A tremolos. In this piece’s shortest movement, the violins alternate a short high E with a sequence of descending half-step slides. Only one movement of this piece was published during its composer’s lifetime since its composer deemed it unserious; that movement was choreographed for Anna Pavlova. A glockenspiel may replace a glass harmonica to create an “underwater” sound in this piece’s seventh movement. Two pianists play scales as one of several parodies in this piece, which include a bass quotation from Berlioz’s “Dance of the Sylphs,” and a xylophone playing its composer’s Danse Macabre to evoke “Fossils.” For 10 points, name this suite by Camille Saint-Saëns that includes “The Swan.” ■END■
