The soloist of this concerto’s third movement allegro scherzando (“skairt-SAHN-doh”) plays rapid arpeggios and staccato eighth notes before a melody beginning [read slowly] “A-flat, G, A-flat, G.” A line in this concerto’s second movement opens with the rising slow triplet notes [read slowly] “G-sharp, B, E, G-sharp” as clarinet, bassoon, (-5[1])and strings play an E major chord. The soloist alternates between clusters of nine and eight notes while first clarinet (10[1])and strings play (10[2])(*) [read slowly] “long (10[2])C, (10[1])short D, (10[3])long C, short (10[2])D, long (10[1])C” in this concerto’s opening movement, which begins with a crescendoing passage of (10[1])block chords and a low (10[1])F. This (10[6]-5[1])concerto, (10[1])written (10[1])for psychiatrist Nikolai (10[1])Dahl, (10[3]-5[1])was applauded at (10[1])its 1901 (10[2])premiere for its (10[2])composer’s large hands.
