When gauche bonds are generated in the alpha phase of these molecules, pleated and rippled sheets of them undergo the Brill transition first observed in 1942. Synthesis of these molecules uses adipoyl chloride and (15[1])1,6-hexanediamine contacting at a liquid-liquid interface. The vast majority of caprolactam is used to synthesize these (-5[1])molecules through a (15[1])ring-opening reaction. An (*) amide backbone characterizes these (-5[1])molecules, which can be continuously pulled out of a (10[1]-5[1])solution in a (-5[1])namesake “rope trick” demonstration. These molecules, (10[1]-5[1])which come in “6” and “6-6” (10[1])families, were first synthesized in 1935 by Wallace (10[1])Carothers while at Dupont.
