In 1990, a conductor came out of retirement to perform this set of pieces with his old orchestra at the opening of a spring festival, after over 40 years in exile. The last piece of this set depicts a shepherd boy playing his pipes and hearing the echo float back to him. The first piece of this set begins with block chords in the second harp alternating with rising arpeggios in the first harp. The third of these pieces depicts a woman who tied herself to a (*) tree to deceive the knight Ctirad (ts-TEE-rahd). The second piece in this set adapts the tune “La Mantovana” for its main theme, and opens with two flutes playing a (10[1])duet in E minor over pizzicato strings, representing two streams merging.
