It is not the horn, but the Paris Conservatoire rejected an omni·tonique design for this instrument by Iwan (EE-van) Müller, who also developed stuffed leather pads to prevent air leakage from it. In the trio from the minuet of Beethoven’s 8th symphony, this instrument and the horns take turns playing the starting melody. This instrument is silent during the first of two trios in the minuet of a chamber piece commissioned by a player of it. Unlike the other members of its section, it overblows at the (*) 12th due to its cylindrical bore. Johann Christoph Denner invented this instrument in Nuremberg around 1700. Mozart combined this instrument with a string quartet in his Quintet in A, K. 581, written for Anton Stadler.
