Question
Answer the following about computer-controlled machinery you probably didn’t get to use in shop class, for 10 points each:
[10m] A CNC mechanism can be used to control the movement of these machines, which rotate the workpiece itself around an axis while another tool does the actual machining. The headstock of this machine holds the workpiece in place while the tailstock provides support.
ANSWER: lathes (CNC stands for Computer Numerical Control, and us engineers had that acronym first!)
[10h] By far the most popular language for CNC is this one. In this language, appending “01” to this language’s namesake letter creates a command to move the machine in a linearly interpolated way.
ANSWER: G-code [prompt on G]
[10e] The G-code command “G32” is often used to create the helical threads on these fasteners. Unlike the similar bolt, they usually do not use a nut to hold them in place.
ANSWER: screws
